Notaries are also required to understand their own states statutory requirements.  Each notary public, as part of their oath of office, swears that they have read and will follow the statutes of their home state.  Lack of knowledge concerning the statues that govern notarial acts is not an excuse and notaries can be held liable for unlimited damages in the event that they do not follow the standard of reasonable care.
